Metsat

Metsat is a satellite mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) that aims to provide global measurements of atmospheric methane, a potent greenhouse gas, with high spatial and temporal resolution. The mission will use a novel instrument called a Methane Remote Sensing Lidar (MERLIN) to measure methane concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere. The satellite will be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of approximately 500 km and will have a mission lifetime of at least three years. The data collected by Metsat will be used to improve our understanding of the sources and sinks of atmospheric methane, which is essential for developing effective strategies to mitigate climate change.
