IGY
IGY stands for International Geophysical Year, which was a global scientific collaboration that took place from July 1957 to December 1958. The purpose of IGY was to promote international cooperation in scientific research related to the Earth and its environment, including the exploration of space. During IGY, scientists from 67 countries conducted research in various fields such as meteorology, seismology, geomagnetism, and ionospheric physics. The launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, by the Soviet Union in October 1957 was a significant event during IGY, which led to the beginning of the Space Age. IGY also laid the foundation for the establishment of several international organizations such as the World Data Center system and the International Council of Scientific Unions.
