Medical Implants
Medical implants are devices or tissues that are placed inside or on the surface of the body to replace a missing biological structure, support a damaged biological structure, or enhance the function of an existing biological structure. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, medical implants are used to address the physiological changes that occur in astronauts during spaceflight, such as bone loss, muscle atrophy, and cardiovascular deconditioning. Examples of medical implants used in space include bone grafts, dental implants, and artificial joints. Medical implants must be designed to withstand the unique environmental conditions of space, such as microgravity, radiation exposure, and limited access to medical resources.
