Low-outgassing Materials
Low-outgassing materials are materials that release minimal amounts of gas or vapor when exposed to vacuum or high temperatures. In space and astronautical engineering, low-outgassing materials are crucial for the success of missions as the released gas or vapor can contaminate sensitive instruments, optics, or surfaces, leading to degradation of performance or failure of the mission. Low-outgassing materials are used in various applications such as spacecraft components, thermal control systems, and scientific instruments. These materials are typically tested and qualified according to industry standards such as ASTM E595 or NASA SP-R-0022A. The testing involves subjecting the materials to vacuum and elevated temperatures and measuring the amount of gas or vapor released. Materials that pass the test are assigned a Total Mass Loss (TML) and Collected Volatile Condensable Material (CVCM) value, which indicate the amount of gas or vapor released under specific conditions.
