Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are a group of chemicals that contain hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. They were developed as a replacement for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which were found to be harmful to the ozone layer. HCFCs have lower ozone depletion potential than CFCs, but they still contribute to ozone depletion. They are also potent greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. HCFCs are used as refrigerants, solvents, and foam blowing agents. In the space and astronautical engineering context, HCFCs have been used as refrigerants in spacecraft and satellites. However, due to their harmful effects on the environment, their use has been phased out and replaced with more environmentally friendly alternatives.
