Heavy Water

Heavy water is a form of water that contains a larger than normal amount of the hydrogen isotope deuterium, rather than the common hydrogen-1 isotope that makes up most of the hydrogen in normal water. Heavy water is used as a neutron moderator in nuclear reactors, as it slows down neutrons and helps to control the fission chain reaction. It is also used in some types of nuclear weapons. Heavy water is produced by a number of methods, including electrolysis and distillation. It is important to handle heavy water with care, as it is both toxic and radioactive.
