Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the process of using an electric current to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, electrolysis is often used to produce oxygen and hydrogen from water, which can then be used as rocket propellant or life support for astronauts. This process is particularly important for long-duration space missions, where it is not feasible to carry all necessary oxygen and water from Earth. Electrolysis can also be used to extract metals and other materials from lunar or asteroid regolith, which could be used for in-situ resource utilization. However, electrolysis requires a significant amount of energy, which can be a challenge in space where power sources may be limited.
