High-lift Device
In aerospace engineering, a high-lift device is a component of an aircraft's wing that is designed to increase the lift produced at slower speeds, particularly during takeoff and landing. These devices function by altering the airflow over the wing, increasing its surface area, and changing its shape to generate more lift. The two primary types of high-lift devices are flaps and slats. Flaps are located on the trailing edge of the wing and can be extended or retracted to increase the wing's camber, thereby increasing lift. Slats are located on the leading edge of the wing and function by creating a 'slot' between themselves and the wing when extended. This allows air to flow smoothly over the wing even at high angles of attack, reducing the likelihood of a stall. High-lift devices are critical to the safe operation of an aircraft, allowing it to fly at slower speeds without losing control.
