GOES I/GOES 8
GOES I/GOES 8 is a series of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, and meteorology research. The first satellite of the series, GOES I, was launched on October 16, 1980, and was followed by GOES 2 through GOES 7. GOES 8, the first of the second generation of GOES satellites, was launched on April 13, 1994, and was in operation until it was decommissioned on April 1, 2003. The GOES I/GOES 8 series of satellites provided continuous monitoring of weather patterns and severe storms in North America, South America, and the Atlantic Ocean, and were equipped with instruments such as the Imager and Sounder to capture images and data on cloud cover, temperature, and moisture in the atmosphere.
