Bioregenerative Life Support Systems

Bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS) are self-sustaining ecosystems that utilize biological processes to recycle waste and produce food, water, and oxygen for astronauts in space. BLSS mimic the Earth's natural ecosystem, where plants, algae, and microbes work together to create a closed-loop system. In space, BLSS can reduce the need for resupply missions and provide a more sustainable way of supporting long-duration space missions. BLSS can also be used to study the effects of microgravity and radiation on biological systems, and to develop technologies for sustainable living on Earth. BLSS typically include a plant growth chamber, a waste processing system, and a water recycling system.
