Fowler Flaps

In the context of aerospace engineering, Fowler Flaps are a type of high-lift device used on the wings of aircraft to increase lift during takeoff and landing. They are named after Harlan Davey Fowler, the inventor who patented the design in 1924. Unlike simple flaps that pivot down from the wing, Fowler Flaps extend rearward and downward, effectively increasing the wing area and its chord, which results in a higher lift coefficient. This extension also creates a slot between the flap and the wing, allowing high-pressure air from below the wing to flow to the top, delaying airflow separation and providing further lift. Fowler Flaps are complex in design and require a robust mechanism to handle the stresses of operation, but their benefits in slow flight conditions make them a common feature in both commercial and military aircraft. They are particularly useful in aircraft that need to operate from short runways, where high lift is essential.
