Fatigue Strength

Fatigue strength is the ability of a material to resist cyclic loading without failure. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, fatigue strength is an important consideration for the design and operation of spacecraft and their components. The repeated stresses and strains experienced during launch, in-orbit operations, and re-entry can cause fatigue damage to materials and structures. Engineers must carefully analyze and test materials to ensure they can withstand the expected number of cycles and loads over the lifetime of the spacecraft. Fatigue strength is typically measured using fatigue tests, which subject the material to cyclic loading until failure occurs. The results of these tests are used to develop fatigue curves, which show the relationship between the number of cycles and the stress level that will cause failure.
