Effective Dose
Effective dose is a measure of the overall harm caused by ionizing radiation to the human body. It takes into account the type of radiation, the amount of radiation absorbed by each organ, and the sensitivity of each organ to radiation. Effective dose is expressed in units of sieverts (Sv) or millisieverts (mSv). The concept of effective dose is important in space and astronautical engineering because astronauts are exposed to higher levels of ionizing radiation than people on Earth due to the lack of protection from the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field. Effective dose is used to assess the risk of cancer and other radiation-induced health effects in astronauts and to develop radiation protection guidelines for space missions.
