Drift Errors

In the context of aerospace engineering, drift errors refer to the inaccuracies that occur in the measurement of an aircraft's or spacecraft's position, velocity, or attitude over time due to the gradual deviation of an instrument's output from its true value. This is often caused by factors such as mechanical wear and tear, temperature changes, or electrical fluctuations. Drift errors are particularly significant in inertial navigation systems (INS), which use accelerometers and gyroscopes to calculate position and orientation based on acceleration and angular velocity. Over time, even small inaccuracies in these measurements can accumulate, leading to significant errors in the calculated position or orientation. This phenomenon, known as 'drift', can be mitigated through various methods, including periodic recalibration of the instruments, the use of error correction algorithms, or the integration of the INS with other navigation systems (such as GPS) to correct for the drift.
