Debris Mitigation

Debris Mitigation refers to the set of measures taken to reduce the amount of space debris in orbit around the Earth. This includes designing spacecraft to limit the amount of debris they generate during launch and operation, as well as removing existing debris from orbit. Debris mitigation is important to ensure the safety of spacecraft and astronauts, as well as to prevent collisions that could create even more debris and exacerbate the problem. The most common debris mitigation measures include designing spacecraft to be less prone to explosions, limiting the amount of fuel and other materials that can be released into space, and deorbiting spacecraft at the end of their useful life. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to develop technologies for actively removing debris from orbit, such as nets, harpoons, and robotic arms.
