Dark Matter

Dark matter is a hypothetical form of matter that is thought to account for approximately 85% of the matter in the universe and about a quarter of its total energy density. It is called 'dark' because it does not interact with light or any other form of electromagnetic radiation, making it invisible to telescopes and other instruments that detect electromagnetic radiation. Its existence is inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, such as stars and galaxies. Dark matter is believed to have played a crucial role in the formation and evolution of the universe, and its properties and distribution are studied through observations of its gravitational effects on visible matter and through computer simulations.
