Coordinate Systems

Coordinate systems are a fundamental tool in space and astronautical engineering used to describe the position and orientation of objects in space. A coordinate system is a reference frame that defines a set of axes and a point of origin. In space, different coordinate systems are used depending on the application. For example, the Earth-centered, Earth-fixed (ECEF) coordinate system is used to describe the position of objects relative to the Earth's surface, while the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) is used to describe the position of objects relative to the stars. Coordinate systems are also used to describe the orientation of objects, such as spacecraft, using Euler angles or quaternions. The choice of coordinate system depends on the specific application and the level of accuracy required.
