Carbonization

Carbonization is the process of converting organic materials into carbon or a carbon-containing residue through pyrolysis or destructive distillation. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, carbonization is an important process for the production of carbon-based materials that are used in various applications such as spacecraft components, thermal protection systems, and rocket nozzles. Carbonization can be achieved through various methods such as chemical vapor deposition, pyrolysis, and carbon fiber production. The resulting carbon-based materials have high strength-to-weight ratios, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, and are resistant to high temperatures and radiation. Carbonization is also used in the production of carbon nanotubes, which have unique mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties that make them ideal for various space applications.
