Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) are composite materials made of carbon fibers and a polymer matrix. The carbon fibers provide high strength and stiffness, while the polymer matrix protects the fibers and transfers the load between them. CFRPs are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, which allows for lighter and more fuel-efficient aircraft. They are also used in spacecraft and satellites, where weight is a critical factor. CFRPs are manufactured using various techniques, including hand layup, filament winding, and automated fiber placement. The properties of CFRPs can be tailored by changing the fiber orientation, the type of polymer matrix, and the manufacturing process. However, CFRPs are expensive and difficult to repair, which limits their use in some applications.
