High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI)
High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI) is an instrument that measures the winds and temperatures in the Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere using the Doppler shift of the light emitted by the atmospheric constituents. HRDI is a part of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) mission launched by NASA in 1991. The instrument uses a laser to emit light at different altitudes and measures the Doppler shift of the light scattered back to the instrument by the atmospheric molecules. HRDI provides high-resolution measurements of the atmospheric winds and temperatures, which are important for understanding the dynamics and energy balance of the Earth's upper atmosphere. The data obtained from HRDI has been used to study the effects of solar activity, atmospheric tides, and gravity waves on the Earth's upper atmosphere.
