Carbon Fibers
Carbon fibers are thin, strong, and lightweight fibers made from carbon atoms that are used extensively in the aerospace industry due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to high temperatures. They are produced by heating synthetic fibers made from organic polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rayon, or petroleum pitch, to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This process, called carbonization, removes all non-carbon atoms and leaves behind a pure carbon fiber. Carbon fibers are used in a variety of aerospace applications, including structural components of spacecraft, rocket nozzles, and heat shields. They are also used in the construction of aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to reduce weight and increase fuel efficiency.
