Artificial Organs

Artificial organs are man-made devices that are implanted or integrated into the human body to replace or enhance the function of a natural organ. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, artificial organs are of particular interest due to the prolonged exposure to microgravity and radiation that astronauts experience during space missions. Artificial organs can be used to replace organs that may be damaged or compromised due to the harsh space environment, or to enhance the function of existing organs to better adapt to space conditions. Examples of artificial organs that have been developed for space applications include artificial lungs, kidneys, and hearts. These devices must be designed to be lightweight, durable, and able to function in a low-gravity environment. Additionally, they must be able to withstand the high levels of radiation that are present in space. The development of artificial organs for space applications has the potential to greatly improve the health and safety of astronauts during long-duration space missions.
