Apollo–Soyuz Test Project

The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was the first joint U.S.-Soviet space flight, and it marked the end of the Space Race that had begun in 1955. Launched in July 1975, it involved a rendezvous in Earth orbit between an American Apollo spacecraft and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft. The mission was primarily a symbol of the policy of détente that the two superpowers were pursuing at the time, demonstrating the cooperative spirit in space exploration. The mission included both joint and separate scientific experiments, including Earth observations, astrophysics, and materials processing. The Apollo spacecraft was equipped with a docking module to facilitate the connection with the Soyuz spacecraft. The mission was considered a success, paving the way for future international cooperation in space, such as the Shuttle-Mir Program and the International Space Station.
