Hydraulic Fluid

Hydraulic fluid is a specially formulated liquid that is used as a medium to transfer power in hydraulic systems. In space and astronautical engineering, hydraulic systems are used in various applications such as controlling the movement of robotic arms, opening and closing of doors, and actuating landing gears. The hydraulic fluid is pressurized by a pump and then transmitted through hoses and tubes to the hydraulic cylinder or motor. The fluid then applies force to the piston or rotor, which in turn generates mechanical power. Hydraulic fluids must have specific properties such as high viscosity index, low compressibility, and resistance to thermal and chemical degradation to ensure the efficient operation of the hydraulic system in the harsh environment of space. The most commonly used hydraulic fluids in space and astronautical engineering are synthetic hydrocarbons, phosphate esters, and silicone fluids.
