Accretion Disks
Accretion disks are structures formed by gas and dust particles that are orbiting around a central object, such as a star or a black hole. These disks are typically flat and circular, and they can extend for millions of kilometers. The particles in the disk lose energy due to friction and other processes, causing them to spiral inward towards the central object. As they do so, they heat up and emit radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, X-rays, and radio waves. Accretion disks are important in the study of astrophysics and cosmology, as they are thought to play a key role in the formation and evolution of stars, planets, and galaxies.
