Viscoelastic Materials
Viscoelastic materials are materials that exhibit both viscous and elastic properties when undergoing deformation. These materials have a time-dependent response to applied stress or strain, meaning that their mechanical behavior changes over time. In space and astronautical engineering, viscoelastic materials are used in a variety of applications, including as thermal protection systems for spacecraft, as vibration dampers for launch vehicles, and as shock absorbers for landing systems. The ability of viscoelastic materials to dissipate energy and reduce vibrations makes them particularly useful in these applications. However, the time-dependent behavior of these materials can also pose challenges in design and analysis, as their properties can change over time and with temperature changes.
