TOVS
TOVS (TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder) is a series of instruments that were flown on NOAA polar orbiting satellites to provide global atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles. The TOVS instrument package consists of three sensors: the High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS), the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU), and the Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU). HIRS measures infrared radiation emitted by the Earth's atmosphere to determine temperature and moisture profiles, while MSU measures microwave radiation to determine temperature profiles. SSU measures infrared radiation to determine temperature profiles in the stratosphere. The data collected by TOVS instruments are used for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and atmospheric research.
