Toughness


Toughness is the ability of a material to resist fracture or failure under stress. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, toughness is a critical property for materials used in spacecraft and space structures. The harsh environment of space, including extreme temperatures, radiation, and micrometeoroids, can cause materials to become brittle and prone to failure. Therefore, materials with high toughness are necessary to ensure the safety and reliability of space systems. Toughness is often measured by the amount of energy required to fracture a material, known as the fracture toughness. Materials with high fracture toughness, such as titanium alloys and composites, are commonly used in spacecraft and space structures.
