Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS)
Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) is a satellite instrument that measures the total amount of ozone in the Earth's atmosphere. It uses ultraviolet and visible light to detect the presence of ozone and other atmospheric gases. TOMS was first launched in 1978 and has since been used to monitor the ozone layer and track the depletion of ozone over the polar regions. The data collected by TOMS has been instrumental in the development of international agreements to reduce the production of ozone-depleting substances. TOMS has also been used to study air pollution, volcanic eruptions, and other atmospheric phenomena.
