Tokamak

A tokamak is a device used to confine hot plasma with magnetic fields in order to sustain a controlled nuclear fusion reaction. It consists of a toroidal vacuum chamber surrounded by a series of magnetic coils that generate a strong magnetic field. The plasma is heated to millions of degrees Celsius and confined within the magnetic field, allowing the atomic nuclei to overcome their natural repulsion and fuse together, releasing energy in the process. Tokamaks are a leading candidate for achieving practical nuclear fusion power, as they are able to confine the plasma for long periods of time and maintain the necessary conditions for fusion to occur. However, significant engineering challenges remain in order to achieve sustained fusion reactions that produce more energy than they consume.
