Time Dilation
Time dilation is a difference in the elapsed time measured by two observers, due to a relative velocity between them or to a difference in gravitational potential between their locations. In other words, time appears to pass slower in stronger gravitational fields and for objects moving at higher velocities. This effect has been confirmed by experiments and is a fundamental aspect of the theory of relativity. Time dilation has important implications for space and astronautical engineering, as it affects the accuracy of GPS systems and the design of spacecraft that travel at high speeds or near massive objects.
