Thermal Stress

Thermal stress is the stress caused by the temperature difference between two adjacent parts of a material or a structure. In space and astronautical engineering, thermal stress is a critical factor that affects the design and operation of spacecraft and space systems. The extreme temperature variations in space can cause thermal stress on the spacecraft components, leading to deformation, cracking, or failure. Thermal stress can also affect the performance of materials and structures, such as reducing their strength, stiffness, and fatigue life. To mitigate thermal stress, engineers use various techniques, such as thermal insulation, active and passive thermal control, and material selection. Thermal stress analysis is an essential part of spacecraft design and testing, and it involves simulating the thermal environment and predicting the thermal response of the spacecraft and its components.
