Regenerative Life Support Systems

Regenerative Life Support Systems (RLSS) are systems that provide life support for humans in space by recycling waste products and generating oxygen, water, and food. RLSS are essential for long-duration space missions, such as those to Mars, as they reduce the need for resupply missions and minimize the amount of waste generated. RLSS typically consist of several subsystems, including a water recovery system, an air revitalization system, and a food production system. The water recovery system collects and purifies wastewater, while the air revitalization system removes carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the air and replenishes it with oxygen. The food production system uses plants or algae to generate oxygen and food, while also removing carbon dioxide from the air. RLSS are critical for enabling sustainable human presence in space and reducing the reliance on Earth for essential resources.
