Radiation Environments


Radiation environments refer to the conditions of space that expose spacecraft and astronauts to various forms of ionizing radiation, including galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, and trapped radiation belts. These radiation environments can cause damage to spacecraft electronics and materials, as well as pose a significant health risk to astronauts. Galactic cosmic rays are high-energy particles that originate from outside our solar system and can penetrate deep into spacecraft and human tissue. Solar particle events are bursts of energetic particles from the sun that can cause acute radiation sickness in astronauts. Trapped radiation belts are regions of high-energy particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field, which can cause damage to spacecraft electronics. Understanding and mitigating the effects of radiation environments is a critical aspect of space and astronautical engineering.
