Planetary Protection Policy

Planetary Protection Policy refers to the set of guidelines and procedures designed to prevent contamination of celestial bodies with biological material from Earth and to prevent the contamination of Earth with extraterrestrial material during space exploration missions. The policy is based on the principle that any potential extraterrestrial life should be protected from contamination and that Earth should be protected from potential harmful biological material that may exist on other planets or moons. The policy is implemented by space agencies and organizations through the use of sterilization techniques and strict protocols for handling and transporting spacecraft and equipment that will come into contact with celestial bodies.
