Ozone Layer Depletion

Ozone layer depletion refers to the thinning and damage of the ozone layer in the Earth's stratosphere. This depletion is primarily caused by the release of human-made chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which react with ozone molecules and break them down. The depletion of the ozone layer can lead to increased levels of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface, which can have harmful effects on human health, such as skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems. It can also have negative impacts on ecosystems, including reduced crop yields, disruptions in the food chain, and harm to marine life. The international community has taken action to address ozone layer depletion through the Montreal Protocol, which aims to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances.
