Metal Ions

In space and astronautical engineering, metal ions refer to atoms or molecules that have lost one or more electrons and carry a positive charge. Metal ions play a crucial role in various processes such as plasma propulsion, ion thrusters, and electrostatic discharge. In plasma propulsion, metal ions are generated by ionizing a propellant gas and accelerating them using an electric field to produce thrust. Ion thrusters use metal ions as a propellant to generate thrust, which is more efficient than traditional chemical rockets. Electrostatic discharge occurs when metal ions build up on the surface of spacecraft and discharge, potentially damaging sensitive equipment. Understanding the behavior of metal ions in space is essential for designing and operating spacecraft.
