Lung Capacity

Lung capacity refers to the total amount of air that the lungs can hold. In space and astronautical engineering context, lung capacity is an important factor to consider for astronauts as they are exposed to microgravity environments. In microgravity, the distribution of fluids in the body changes, causing a shift of fluids from the lower extremities to the upper body, including the lungs. This shift can cause a decrease in lung capacity and function, which can lead to respiratory problems. Therefore, it is important for astronauts to maintain their lung capacity through regular exercise and breathing techniques. Additionally, lung capacity is also a factor in the design of spacesuits and life support systems, as they must be able to provide adequate oxygen to the astronaut's lungs.
