Loss Of Signal (LOS)


Loss Of Signal (LOS) is a term used in space and astronautical engineering to describe the loss of communication between a spacecraft and its ground station. This can occur due to various reasons such as the spacecraft moving behind a planet or other celestial body, equipment failure, or interference from other sources. When a spacecraft experiences LOS, it is unable to receive commands from the ground station or transmit data back to Earth. This can be a critical situation for the spacecraft and its mission, as it may result in a loss of control or the inability to receive important data. Engineers and operators must have contingency plans in place to deal with LOS events, including procedures for re-establishing communication and recovering the spacecraft if necessary.
