Lidars

Lidars (Light Detection and Ranging) are remote sensing systems that use laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and surface characteristics of objects. In space and astronautical engineering, lidars are used for a variety of applications, including atmospheric sensing, terrain mapping, and spacecraft navigation. Lidars can provide highly accurate measurements of atmospheric properties such as temperature, pressure, and composition, which are critical for understanding the behavior of Earth's atmosphere and predicting weather patterns. They can also be used to create detailed maps of planetary surfaces, which can aid in the planning of future missions. In addition, lidars are used for spacecraft navigation, providing precise measurements of distance and velocity that are essential for maintaining the correct trajectory during spaceflight.
