Liability Convention
Liability Convention is an international treaty that establishes the liability of spacecraft operators for damage caused by their space objects. The treaty was adopted in 1972 and entered into force in 1975. According to the Liability Convention, the launching state is liable for damage caused by its space object on the surface of the Earth or to aircraft in flight. The launching state is also liable for damage caused by its space object to another space object or its components. The Liability Convention applies to all space objects launched into space, including satellites, space stations, and space debris. The treaty encourages states to cooperate in the investigation of space-related incidents and to provide assistance to each other in the event of damage or injury. The Liability Convention is an important legal framework for the peaceful use of outer space.
