International Civil Aviation Organization
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that sets international standards and regulations necessary for the safety, security, efficiency, and regularity of air transport worldwide. It serves as the medium for cooperation in all fields of civil aviation among its 193 member states. Established in 1944, the ICAO is responsible for the planning and development of international air transport to ensure safe and orderly growth. Its fields of expertise include air navigation, prevention of unlawful interference, and facilitation of border-crossing procedures for international civil aviation. ICAO defines the protocols for air accident investigation followed by transport safety authorities in countries signatory to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention. The ICAO also coordinates assistance and cooperation between nations in support of a sustainable civil aviation sector, including the environmental impacts of aviation.
