Ice Shelf

An ice shelf is a thick floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. Ice shelves are found only in Antarctica, Greenland, and Canada. They are important because they slow down the flow of glaciers and ice sheets into the ocean, which helps to regulate sea level rise. Ice shelves also provide a habitat for a variety of marine animals, including krill, fish, and seals. However, climate change is causing ice shelves to melt and break apart, which can lead to the acceleration of glacier and ice sheet flow into the ocean, contributing to sea level rise.
