High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS)
High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) is a passive remote sensing instrument that measures the infrared radiation emitted by the Earth's atmosphere and surface. It is used to obtain information about atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles, cloud cover, and surface temperature. HIRS has been flown on several meteorological satellites, including NOAA and EUMETSAT spacecraft, and has been in operation since the 1970s. The instrument has undergone several upgrades over the years, resulting in improved spatial and spectral resolution, as well as increased sensitivity and accuracy. HIRS data is used for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and research on atmospheric processes.
