Heat Pipes

Heat pipes are passive heat transfer devices that utilize the latent heat of vaporization and condensation to transfer heat from one point to another. They consist of a sealed, evacuated tube containing a working fluid, typically water or ammonia. Heat is absorbed at the evaporator end of the tube, causing the working fluid to vaporize and carry the heat to the condenser end of the tube. At the condenser, the vapor condenses back into a liquid, releasing the heat. Heat pipes are commonly used in spacecraft thermal control systems, where they can transfer heat from electronic components or other heat sources to radiators that dissipate the heat into space. They are also used in terrestrial applications, such as cooling of high-power electronics and in HVAC systems.
