Exhaust Velocities


Exhaust velocity is the speed at which exhaust gases are expelled from a rocket engine. It is a critical parameter in rocket propulsion because it determines the thrust and specific impulse of the engine. The higher the exhaust velocity, the greater the thrust and specific impulse. Exhaust velocity is influenced by the type of propellant used, the combustion process, and the design of the engine nozzle. In order to achieve high exhaust velocities, rocket engines often use high-energy propellants such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, and employ complex nozzle designs such as the bell nozzle or aerospike nozzle.
