Global Warming Potential

Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a measure of how much a given mass of greenhouse gas is estimated to contribute to global warming over a specified time period, relative to carbon dioxide. GWP is calculated by multiplying the amount of the greenhouse gas being measured by the gas's respective radiative forcing and the length of time it remains in the atmosphere. The higher the GWP, the more that a given gas warms the Earth compared to carbon dioxide over the same time period. GWP is often used to compare the potential impact of different greenhouse gases on climate change and to develop strategies to reduce emissions of these gases.
