Galactic Cosmic Rays
Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are high-energy particles, mostly protons and atomic nuclei, that originate from outside the Solar System and travel through the Milky Way galaxy. They are considered a major source of radiation hazard for astronauts and spacecraft in deep space missions, as they can penetrate shielding materials and cause damage to electronic equipment and biological tissues. GCRs are also believed to play a significant role in the evolution of the universe, as they contribute to the ionization and heating of interstellar gas and dust, and may trigger the formation of new stars and planets. The study of GCRs is therefore important for both space exploration and astrophysics.
