Electroplating

Electroplating is the process of depositing a thin layer of metal onto a conductive surface using an electric current. In space and astronautical engineering, electroplating is used to coat spacecraft components with a thin layer of metal to improve their durability, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. Electroplating is also used to create reflective surfaces for mirrors and solar panels, as well as to create electrical contacts and circuitry. The process involves immersing the component to be plated in a solution containing ions of the metal to be deposited, and passing an electric current through the solution. The metal ions are attracted to the component and deposit onto its surface, forming a thin, uniform layer. The thickness and properties of the plated layer can be controlled by adjusting the current, voltage, and composition of the plating solution.
