Descent Stage
In space and astronautical engineering, the descent stage refers to the lower part of a spacecraft that is used to land on a celestial body, such as the moon or Mars. The descent stage is typically equipped with engines, landing gear, and other systems necessary for a safe landing. Once the spacecraft has landed, the descent stage is usually discarded, as it is no longer needed for the mission. The design of the descent stage is critical to the success of a mission, as it must be able to withstand the stresses of landing on a foreign surface and provide a stable platform for the rest of the spacecraft.
